Olympic Ice Dancing

Olympic Ice Dancing, the Pyeongchang ballet.

Forget being a sports fan for a moment and revel in the beauty and majesty of yesterday’s Olympic Ice Dancing. The elegance, poise and sheer mesmerising abilities of Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir blew the competition away, and left us begging for more.

France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron put on a performance to impress, but Gabriella’s costume malfunction cost them in concentration needed to bag the points.

There were none of the usual throws, jumps and lifts that we normally attribute to the Ice skating, just a beautiful display of poise and elegance. A true cross between Ice Skating and Dancing on Ice.

Not since the fabulous days of our very own Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean danced the magnificent Bolero back in 1994 Olympics have we been this moved by a performance. Coomes and Buckland have taken over the reigns from Torvill and Dean and captured our hearts too.

The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang has been brilliant, especially the Olympic Ice Dancing or the Pyeongchang ballet on ice as we should call it. It’s given us a spectacle that we will remember. Moreover, it has reaffirmed our love for all things ice related.

The New Torvill and Dean

Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland missed out on a top-10 finish, but that was to be expected given the quality of the top three that took the medals. The fact that they were even at the Olympics was nothing short of inspirational.

Penny Coomes suffered a serious knee injury that kept her off skates for the best part of 18 months. Something that could have finished her carrier. Nicholas Buckland didn’t have it any easier after he had life-saving heart surgery in 2014.

They won’t be coming home with a medal, but that doesn’t matter. Their strength and sheer determination to overcome adversity is an inspiration to us all. Congratulations to you both.

Here’s a little something that I found on YouTube. Get ready to be impressed ladies. This is for you.
