Sports Betting USA, un-banning the ban.
Sports Betting USA could be back in business after the Supreme Court over-tuned a ruling that prohibited Sports Betting outside of Nevada. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was deemed “unconstitutional”by the Supreme Court. Congress passed the PASPA in 1992,. The PASPA regulated and prevented state governments from enacting sports betting laws.
The Supreme Court’s ruling will bring change for American Gaming and reverse the prohibition of wagering. Betting legislation can now be implemented in the states that have passed sports betting laws. Individual states and sovereign tribal nations now have the option to move forward and create a sports betting market. The ruling stipulates that the original aim of the PASPA to protect consumers, preserve the integrity of the games and empower law enforcement to fight illegal gambling must stand.
That said, it is a powerful move forward and one that should generate revenue for sporting bodies and affiliates alike.
Comes with a Warning
Justice Samuel Alito issued a statement on behalf of the Supreme Court. “The legalisation of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make. Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each state is free to act on its own.”
