Superhuman Paralympic performance.
If ever there was a time to rejoice in the achievements of a Superhuman race, the Paralympics are it. Mankind pushing to the limits with effort and extraordinary displays of superhuman strength.
The Paralympics represent the very best of us. Forget for a moment that there is sport involved, these are achievements that show case the very best of being human.
I have to be honest and say that although I thought the Olympics was a fantastic display of sporting excellence, I’d kind of had my fill of sport and the thought of watching another two weeks would be too much. Basically, I thought that the sport wasn’t going to be as good. How wrong could I be!
The Paralympics is everything that it promised to be. Fantastic sport performed by the most determined and talented athletes. Disabilities! What disabilities? There is a moment when you watch the Paralympics that you think “oh how awful that must be”, then you realise that the only person that actually see’s whatever problems and disabilities that they have as a disability is you.
Sympathy, self-pity and self-insecurity are words that your average Paralympian would need to look up. It’s just not part of their vocabulary. Replacing these words with sheer determination and awesomeness.
Is there nothing we can’t do?
I switched over and caught the last couple of minutes of the 1a grade Dressage. Watching Sophie Christiansen winning gold in the individuals was nothing short of awesome. I was totally blown away by the brilliance of what I had just seen. And not just the fact that a human can control or train a horse to perform either. The fact that someone with Cerebral Palsy can control and hold her own body as well as that of her horse was nothing short of spectacular.
For those that don’t know, Cerebral Palsy is disease that causes physical disability in human development, including movement, posture, sensation, depth perception and body movement (see Wikipedia).
A summer of inspiration, but the use of the word “inspiration” covered stars of the Olympics such as Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Jessica Ennis./ What they have achieved is mind blowingly awesome. But, the real inspirations here are the Paralympic Athletes such as Sophie Christiansen that have had to overcome life first before becoming a sporting legend.
If you are reading this Sophie, my full admiration goes out to you and your fellow athletes for being my inspiration.
