WhatsApp age restrictions

WhatsApp age restrictions, and about time too.

The latest changes to the monster known as “social media” are the WhatsApp age restrictions. Protection of minors takes precedence in the changes to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) due in May, resulting in WhatsApp stopping the use of it’s service to under 16s.

With 1.3 billion registered users, data protection is top of the new agenda, especially when it comes to the youngest. The current age is set at 13 but will be increased across the EU in an attempt to protect minors from data sharing and adverts that are not age appropriate.

The changes to the GDPR comes into effect as of the 25th May 2018, which will give social media users more control over how their information is used.

Change is needed for all Social Media platforms, and WhatsApp will be leading the way in giving its users access to information stored. As part of their new T&C’s users can download a report detailing the data it holds on them. This will include information on the device used, contacts, groups and blocked numbers.

Other Apps used by teenagers will need to make “reasonable efforts” to verify the age of, or that a parent or guardian has given consent for their child’s data to be handled.
Change is coming and it’s all for the good.
