New Online Gambling Restrictions

New Online Gambling Restrictions that work are rare. Most skirt around gambling in an attempt to make a difference to the operator and not the player. The new improved measures look like they could make a real difference to the way we spin to win.

The Gambling Commission is starting to look at measures that are designed to make online casino games less intensive. Making playing online gambling games enjoyable, which in our opinion and a very positive step in the right direction.

New online Gambling Restrictions

These new measures are directed at the Online Casino-style sites that offer reel to reel games and other casino games. The changes should all be in effect as of 31st October 2021 and include restrictions on the speed slot spins play and a permanent ban on games that speed up play or celebrate losses as wins. A ban on reverse withdrawals and all losses and wins must be displayed.

The online gambling industry has taken a positive step in the fight to control obsessive or compulsive gambling. With the New Online Gambling Restrictions, the Gambling Commission is working with online gambling operators to limit any potential damage the compulsive play can cause. Previous interventions have made an impact with Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBT), with a massive reduction in maximum stakes being introduced.

These new measures are sensible safety measures that will make a difference to every player, not just those with betting/gambling problems.

Slot Speed restrictions

Studies by the Gambling Commission have shown that an estimated 70% of all online casino-style games are slot or reel related. This new measure to reduce the speed in which the reels spin with stop players burning through their gambling balance within minutes. Some games last less than 9 seconds before the next starts. To put that into perspective, if played constantly with a 10p stake and a starting balance of £10, you would have emptied your balance in less than 9 minutes.

Slowing down the reel spins makes the game enjoyable and gives the player time to think.

Losses as Wins

All losses and wins will also need to be displayed. This is an important step from the Gambling Commission, as it stops games displaying a win as something that is lower than the original stake.

If you play a 20p game and you win 30P, then you have won 10p. Simple stuff. But, if you play a 20p game and win 8p, then it’s still displayed as a win, even though you have lost 12p. Despite the flashing message that you are a “WINNER” in large letters, you’ve actually won nothing.

It sounds like a trivial thing, as most people will know that this isn’t really a win, but it leads to false interpretation of what defines a win. Changing this will make a difference.

Reverse withdrawals

A very import change that is being introduced is the banning of reverse withdrawals. Basically, a reverse withdrawal is a function that allows players to re-gamble money they had requested to be withdrawn. That small change is a good thing as it stops winnings being used as a “top-up” feature.

Safety in online gambling is something that every gambling site looks to promote. Over the last couple of years, the gambling industry has been forced to look at the part they play in addiction. The introducing “Safe Play” modes allow players to self-exclude and seek help has been a very welcomed feature that is more or less standard on every competent gambling site.

Moderate responsible gambling with simple tips:

  • Set a budget – have a maximum deposit, stake or loss plan before gambling
  • Never try to recoup your debt with your winnings
  • Stop if you lie about their gambling and attempt to hide it from others
  • Don’t borrow money, or sell possessions in order to gamble
